Have Dreams That Scare You

Have dreams that scare you and goals that don't.

The most common reason why people come see me is because they're not where they want to be in life. That can be for so many reasons, such as unexpected life events that throw a spanner in the works, being too passive in life, or even discovering a passion for something they never knew they had. But when that happens, it can feel like getting to that new place in life feels impossible. You can feel stuck in your job, your responsibilities, even your physical location. So you put that dream in a cupboard in your mind and only take it out when you're dreaming about what you'd do if you won the lottery.

Why we should have dreams that scare us

What if I told you that you don't have to let go of a dream simply because it feels too far away or too impossible? What if I told you that your dreams should be scary? Because they should be. Scary dreams reflect ambition, passion, and an amazing imagination for how your life could be. Dreams that scare you are dreams that will push you and bring about wonderful change in your life. Our dreams for our life should scare us because that is our brain recognising how different that dream is from our present situation. And that present situation might be disappointing us, crushing us, or even boring us.

Where so many people fall down

Where so many people fall down is by thinking that the dream is the goal and since that goal is way too huge and unrealistic, therefore our dream is too huge and unrealistic. But that's simply not true. Where we're going wrong here is that we're thinking step 10 or even step 15 in a life plan is step 1, and we're not considering the smaller steps that will guide us closer to achieving that dream.

For example, say you had a dream of being a chef in a top restaurant in New York, but you currently just cook your flatmates dinner on a Friday night for fun. That dream is scary because it entails a huge change and feels unrealistic because 1 you're not a chef and 2 you're currently living in a little town on the other side of the world. So you give up on that dream, and continuing going through life passively, leaving that dream in that cupboard.

How to set goals that are more realistic

But that dream could be broken down into some more realistic goals that don't scare you and feel much more possible. Using that example, you could start taking cooking classes. That could like subscribing to an online cooking course and completing a lesson a week at first. See? That's a pretty reasonable goal. You could also start looking at your finances, and figure out the best way to start saving for culinary school. Again, this is feeling possible. From there, you just keep setting manageable goals for yourself until eventually, you find yourself with a culinary qualification and enough savings to move to New York.

By breaking down a dream into steps, you can begin to add passion and purpose into your life as you start dedicating time and space to your dreams, instead of just going through the motions of life. So what's your dream? What's a thought about the future that scares you, but also kind of excites you at the same time?
